In collaboration with our partners

The #AnimateCapeTown Challenge is open to animators of all ages and experience levels. Get your work seen by an international audience!

The Challenge

The Scene It team have selected 10 Hotspots around Cape Town. The challenge is to create a short animation featuring one (or more!) of those spots. Theme: UNEXPECTED.

Register on our website to start the process and to show your interest in contributing an animation piece to this campaign.

Look carefully at the video plates of our 10 hotspots around Cape Town (see below). Select which plate provides the best background for your characters / assets / story, and request a copy.

Animate the video plate in your style, and submit to the platform to take part in the competition! Don’t forget to follow the guidelines.

(If stop-motion is your thing, you’ll need to visit the hotspot to film. You can also film your own plates in the given hotspots if you prefer.)

The submission page is NOW LIVE and available through your account once logged in!

Completed videos can be viewed by members of the public scanning QR codes which can be found at the various Animation Hotspots.

Stop motion, mixed reality, full 2D & 3D animation, flipbook-style animation, motion graphics, or lyric videos.

Prizes will be awarded for the best animations as chosen by the public and our panel of judges.

A Harman camera and accessories – Cape Film Supply
Handmade leather laptop bag – Rein Handgemaak
R1000 voucher & art supplies hamper – The Deckle Edge

Yes, we mentioned an international audience!

These are spots that attract tourists, and together with our partners at What’s on in Cape Town, we’ll be actively driving traffic to interact with your videos by visiting those spots and seeking out the QR codes. PLUS we’ll be incentivising viewers to vote for their favourite videos.

Yes, you can enter up to 2 times per hotspot. Characters can remain the same but each video MUST HAVE an original story.

Yes, but we cannot ensure that your video will reach the eyes of the judges.

Yes, if you would like it to (or you can use a pseudonym). You can also supply contact details or a hyperlink to your showreel if you would like to use the video to showcase your work.

No! This is not AR. No special apps or software are required. This is simply short films being made available for viewing in the same location in which they were shot.
